What Does it take to be a reading mentor?
Do I need any special qualifications?
The most important qualifications are willingness to help, love of children, and patience! You also need to be a good reader. I can help teach you anything else you need to know.
How much time does it take?
Normally plan to spend at least 45 minutes in the classroom for individual or group mentoring, and about 90 minutes if you can help with Language Arts center activities.
How will I know what to do?
I will have detailed instructions and all the supplies for any mentoring activities. I would like to have you spend at least two 45 or 90 minute sessions observing the skill or strategy you will mentor before getting started on your own. You will never be alone in the classroom. I will always be available to help with any questions, concerns or discipline issues.
Is there training available?
In addition to observing in the classroom, this website is designed to help provide training modules for teaching reading skills and strategies. I have included links to demonstration videos and articles about each strategy. I can also schedule time to work with you so that you are comfortable with the activity.
What if I can't make my regularly scheduled time?
It is very important to give me as much advance notice as possible so that I can make other arrangements. I understand that sometimes emergencies happen, but just call, text, or email me as soon as possible to let me know that you can't make it.
